History of Mumbai :Initially a group of seven islands located on the Konkan coastline, Mumbai or then Bombay was the land of Koli fisherman till it was captured by Sultan Muhamed Begada. In the ancient period (273-232BC) it was part of the Maurya Empire. In 1348 these Hindu islands came under the control of Muslims Sultans of Gujarat. After Vasco da Gama discovered the sea-route, it came under the focus of Portugese who launced repeated attacks and finally on 23 Dec. 1534, it was taken over by the king of Portugal.

Gateway of India : Built in the indo-sarcanic style, Gateway of India is the entrance to India for those who land in India from abroad by sea. In 1911 King George V and Queen Mary entered India through this water front when they came to participate in Delhi Durbar. In their honour a white gateway was built at that time.
Marine drive : Leaning on the Back-Bay coast, the coast-line takes curve and forms the half-moon shaped Marine Drive running along a long stretch of 3 kms. Former Marine Drive has been renamed after Pride of Bengal, Netaji Subhash Bose- Netaji Subhash Rd. It is impossible to find a tourist who has visited Mumbai yet did not enjoy the pleasant breeze here. Amidst darkness of night,the illuminated houses all around Marine Drive creates the illusion as if the hill has worn a necklace of diamonds-pearls-emeralds. Hence it is also popularly known as Queen's Necklace.
Hanging Garden :
Though named Hanging Garden, in reality it is located on the low peak of Malabar Hills and built in 1880. It was renovated and modernised in 1921. The view of the sunset over the Arabian Sea from here is beautiful. Bushes are trimmed to make the shape of animals are added attractions of this garden.
